In keeping with summer Community Safety initiatives, the Timmins Police Service and its “Youth in Policing” team hosted a bike radio today at the Urban Park at the corner of Maple and Third Avenue.
Young cyclists were treated to an informative video presentation followed by a rigorous bicycle course to test their skills and knowledge of safety rules.
Officials from the Porcupine Health Unit were on hand to perform bicycle helmet inspections and a brief “helmet fitting” presentation.
Each participant received a pass for laser tag and ballot to win a brand new bike. The draw is set to take place in late august.
Timmins Police Service Constable Rick Lemieux was on hand with his Youth In Policing ambassadors to answer bike safety questions and provide guidance to novice riders.
Youth In Policing team leader Alexa Madore is quick to point out” The focus of this campaign is to promote safety for young cyclists in the area and to reinforce good “driving” habits which include the proper use of hand signals, the wearing of a proper helmet at all times and responsible operation of bicycles. The Timmins Police Service – Youth in Policing team is always eager and at the ready to assist young cyclists become safe riders”
Darren the DARE lion was also on hand to provide “high fives” to each course participant.
