The Timmins Police Service is issuing a Communique in regards to the legal obligation of all vehicle owners to renew their vehicle permits despite the recent dissolution of the Ontario licence plate validation sticker system.
In February 2022, the Government of Ontario announced the elimination of licence plate renewal fees and the requirement to have a licence plate sticker for passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, motorcycles and mopeds.
Since that time, some modest confusion has taken hold in regards to the obligations imposed on all vehicle owners in Ontario in regard to the legal requirement to renew vehicle registrations.
While the renewal fee and validation sticker system have been eliminated, it is still a legal requirement for vehicle owners to renew their plates for free through Service Ontario.
At present, it is abundantly clear that licence plate renewals are below expected levels in Ontario.
In response, the Timmins Police Service is issuing a firm reminder to all motorists to be in full compliance and to respect the responsibility to renew your vehicle’s licence plate.
It stands to reason that those individuals with expired licence plates must renew their plates immediately. Since there are no longer any fees, there are no impediments to attending to this necessary legal chore.
The Timmins Police has adopted an educational approach but that stance is nearing its end.
Eventually, claiming ignorance or the premise of simply being unaware will not inspire leniency at the roadside.
Motorist can begin the process by acquainting themselves with this process by attending the local Service Ontario kiosk (at the 101 Mall) or by making use of the following link: https://www.ontario.ca/page/serviceontario
