With Constable Rick Lemieux or Bill Field on hand to explain the dangers of distracted driving, the message gets solid reinforcement by means of “taking a few laps” with the Timmins Police Distracted Driving simulator.
Drivers are asked to take to the wheel of the simulator and try and navigate through traffic while using their hand-held devices. The outcomes are always an eye-opener.
Thankfully the collisions are simulated but do help send a lasting message to the drivers who test their luck.
The intended purpose is that drivers learn first hand just how unforgiving distracted driving really is in terms of reduced reaction times, damage to vehicles, and injury to drivers in simulated collisions.
