The Timmins Police Service has been made aware of the tragic circumstances that has resulted in the “on duty” death of an OPP Sergeant and the wounding of two other officers.
One Ontario Provincial Police officer has died, and two others were injured, after they were shot while responding to a call for service in the eastern Ontario community of Bourget, near Ottawa early this morning.
The officer who was killed has been identified as Sgt. Eric Mueller, according to OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique.
“We anxiously await for further word on his fellow officers who are still at hospital,” Carrique said in a post issued earlier today.
Just after 2 a.m., Mueller and two other officers were called to a disturbance at a home on Laval Street in Bourget.
Someone had reported hearing a gunshot.
When the officers arrived, all three were shot by someone at the home.
They were taken to hospital in Ottawa, where Sgt Mueller succumbed to his injuries and died.
The two others are recovering; their conditions were not released to the public.
One person has been arrested.
It what is becoming an all too familiar circumstance, the Timmins Police Service is offering its sincere acknowledgment of the bravery of these officers and the sacrifice made by Sgt. Mueller in the name of public safety
The Timmins Police Service, both uniform and civilian members, wishes to convey its condolences to the members of the OPP detachment and the community of Bourget who remain in shock in the wake of this tragedy.
Our thoughts and prayers are extended to the families of each of these officers as they struggle to come to terms with this overwhelming loss.
